Born in Montréal, Richard Goldbloom entered both the practice of pediatrics and academic medicine at McGill University in 1954. In 1967, he was appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatrics at Dalhousie University. He was also the first Physician-in-Chief and Director of Research at the Izaak Walton Killam Hospital for Children. He continues to serve as Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, and remains an active medical practitioner. A distinguished academic, Goldbloom has held 76 visiting or distinguished lectureships, at institutions such as Oxford University and the Mayo Clinic.
While acquiring a global reputation, Goldbloom has found time to give outstanding service to the community. Among his many volunteer positions are Chair of the Rhodes Scholar Selection Committee for the Maritimes and Vice-President of Symphony Nova Scotia.
Such service to community and medicine has won him many honours. He won the Canadian Medical Association's Frederick Newton Gisborne Starr Award, described as "The Victoria Cross of Medicine," last year. A recipient of two honorary degrees (including one from Dalhousie in 2000), Goldbloom became an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1987.
